Moat Lane Development Soaks up £83,000

by Chris Lofts on 24 June, 2012

The controversial Moat Lane development in Towcester has overspent by a massive £83,000 even before a sod has been cut, according to figures released by South Northants Council.
‘Towcester welcomes this overall development but poor financial management by the ruling Tories is costing the community thousands.’ commented Lib Dem Councillor Martin Johns.
End of year accounts show that delays to the complex negotiations with the Council’s chosen developer have sucked in money that could have delivered other vital services.
‘A major sticking point in the negotiations has been the proposed relocation of SNC’s offices from Springfields to Moat Lane’, explained Lib Dem Cllr Chris Lofts. ‘No local Towcester councillor has been involved in these discussions. The Conservatives have been very secretive and seem set on wasting public money behind closed doors.’
‘How can residents in Towcester and across the district have any confidence the Tory run Council can properly manage the rest of the project?’, posed Lib Dem Cllr Lisa Samiotis. ‘If they can’t even control costs before work starts what hope is there for the future?’
‘Lib Dems tried to get SNC to help pay for vital services such as a primary school crossing patrol and help for young unemployed travel costs. £83,000 would have been more than enough to help these vulnerable residents’, stated Cllr Johns.
